Essentials vs Pro — the real decision
Essentials buys production volume with shared-IP defaults and standard support. It suits teams under ~100k monthly sends with mixed transactional and notification traffic, where subusers and event webhooks already provide enough isolation. Most SaaS MVPs live here comfortably for a year.
Pro buys reputation ownership: the dedicated-IP path, deeper deliverability insights, and controls (reverse DNS, IP pools, stricter stream separation) that matter once volume is sustained and placement is revenue-critical. The mistake is upgrading for vanity — a dedicated IP with sporadic sends performs worse than a warm shared pool. Upgrade when daily volume is steady and you can fund a proper warmup schedule (see IP warmup discussion).
Volume math
Side project → production
Free 100/day covers auth flows and error alerts during build. Move to Essentials once real users arrive or Marketing campaigns exceed the 6k-email free allowance.
Marketplace / multi-tenant
Subusers isolate per-client reputation; Pro pools isolate transactional from promotional per tenant. Budget the Pro floor plus overage/add-on volume rather than comparing Essentials sticker prices.
Cost traps
- Running campaigns and receipts in one stream, then buying deliverability add-ons to fix placement that separation would have prevented.
- Skipping validation and suppression hygiene — see validation and suppression sync.
- Paying Pro before volume justifies it; warmup discipline is a recurring cost, not a checkbox.
